Meeting between members of the SIRGAS Project and the Galileo Information Centre
On the 12th of January 2023 a meeting between members of the SIRGAS Project, the Geodetic Reference System for the Americas, and representatives of the Galileo Information Centre for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean took place online.
During the meeting, the parties explained their main scientific capabilities and ongoing projects. In particular, Mrs. Elena Megias (coordinator of the Galileo Information Centre) presented the activities of the Galileo Information Centre, the potential of Galileo and the added value it provides in numerous market segments, specifically in Geomatics, emphasizing Galileo differentiators such as the High Accuracy Service (HAS) and the Open Service – Navigation Message Authentication (OS-NMA).
As well, Álvaro Álvarez (IGN of Costa Rica) Calderón detailed the role that SIRGAS plays in the American continent and its achievements. He also took the opportunity to announce that the Experimental Processing Centre Instituto Geográfico Nacional de Costa Rica (IGN-CR) becomes an official SIRGAS processing centre as of January 1, 2023, with 10 local processing centres.
SIRGAS is a Pan-American organization made up of regional geodesy and cartography government agencies, universities and research centres, which aims to establish a modern reference framework on the continent, compatible with the most accurate positioning techniques currently available, GNSS. The adoption of a precise and unified reference framework in the continent constitutes the first step to guarantee a consistent spatial data infrastructure among the member countries.
As a corollary to the meeting, all attendees expressed their interest in maintaining a fluent bilateral dialogue to continue exploring and identifying potential areas of joint work.
The meeting was attended by 3 members from the SIRGAS Project, Mr. Álvaro Álvarez Calderón (IGN of Costa Rica), Mr. Carlos Gómez Salazar (IGN of Costa Rica) and Mr. Efraín Menjivar Pérez (Real Estate Registry) and two representatives of the Galileo Information Centre, Mr. David Aguilar (Geotecnologias) and Mrs. Elena Megias (GIC).
