From March 29 to 31, the Mexico-European Union Forum: Sustainable and Smart Mobility was held with the aim of promoting an exchange of ideas, experiences and good practices between government entities, industry representatives, the academic sector and the main civil associations of the European Union and Mexico on the future of sustainable mobility.
The GIC participated on March 29, “Sustainable, safe and smart mobility“, and intervened in the debate “The future of automated transport“. Once again, the GIC had the opportunity to promote the European Satellite Navigation Systems and highlight the importance of the use of GNSS in automated transport. GIC’s intervention joined other experts who focused their intervention on the full automation of the railway sector and on the safety regulations for automated systems.
To this interesting forum on current issues, the GIC brought the benefits of the use of GNSS in mobility applications such as the rationalization of urban traffic, the improvement in the flow of goods, the use of autonomous vehicles and Urban Air Mobility, among others. “Thanks to the use of GNSS the concept of transport, as we know it today, is going to change in the years to come.” said Maria Mota, coordinator of the GIC Mexico.
The use of Galileo/EGNOS satellite positioning systems extends to many areas of transport and mobility given its great potential in the automation of transport, logistics and mobility services, and its ability to improve efficiency and safety. These technologies allow a more efficient and sustainable use of mobility. For example, to achieve one of the main objectives of sustainable mobility, the reduction of polluting emissions from a vehicle, fleet managers can use the position information of the vehicles obtained through global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) – with adequate precision, and with signal availability, continuity and integrity – and use this information to monitor and visualize the location of vehicles in real time and automatically calculate the fastest and most efficient routes, which allows to increase the efficiency in the use of vehicles and make a more sustainable use of mobility.
The intervention of the GIC can be seen on YouTube: Day 1. Sustainable, Safe and Smart Mobility (from 1:47:10 to 1:59:03).
