EU-LAC Digital Alliance to be launched in March 2023

The launch will be a suitable scenario to kick-start the dialogue and exchanges among EU-LAC governments at high level, while involving a broad range of digital stakeholders to accompany the discussions.

The European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have a long-standing strategic partnership, based on shared values, history and culture as well as solid economic ties and common interests. In today’s contested world, the EU-LAC partnership is of geopolitical importance.

Cooperation on EU space technologies is one of the pillars of the EU-LAC Digital alliance. Programmes such as Galileo, EGNOS and Copernicus offering positioning, navigation, timing, earth observation, remote sensing and weather monitoring solutions, among others, are of vital importance for the region because it covers a vast geographic area with dense vegetation and topographical features at variance. Although Latin American countries have made varying degrees of investment in space, a range of space technology related services are still provided by states outside the region and that is why space cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean is so very important.

Constitute a comprehensive political and cooperation framework for digital engagement with the region is one of the key points that will be addressed during the meeting. Build a positive agenda with the region and reduce the digital divide, building sustainable, equal, inclusive and cohesive digital societies are the two other key points of this initiative.

Through this initiative, EU will support the regulatory and policy cooperation, the extension of connectivity infrastructures, the innovation and private sector cooperation and digitally-enabled products and e-services.
