Closing ceremony of Galileo Information Centre held
The Galileo Information Centre for Mexico held its closing ceremony on 26 October in Mexico City.
The Galileo Information Centre, which started operations in December 2020, is coming to an end and for this reason the closing ceremony was held on 26 October, both in person at the Palacio de Minería in Mexico City and online, organised jointly with the Mexican Space Agency.
The event had a participation of 85 people in person and about 135 people connected by streaming. Among the attendees were diplomats, members of the Government, academic members, members of industry and members of the AEM and the GIC, from 18 countries, highlighting Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of the European Union in Mexico, Mr. Gautier Mignot, the Director of the Mexican Space Agency, Dr. Salvador Landeros and the person in charge of the Galileo Information Centres in Latin America and representing the European Commission and the Directorate General for Defence, Industry and Space, Mr. Luis Cuervo. The three highlighted the achievements of the GIC Mexico, consisting of increasing the knowledge of Galileo and EGNOS in the region and of the European Union’s space policy in general; and facilitating avenues of cooperation with the European space ecosystem so that the EU becomes a strategic partner in the digitalisation of the region.
During the event, the achievements of the GIC Mexico over the past three years were also presented, including seminars held, attendees at events, technical notes published and GNSS courses held (in-person and MOOC format).
Time was also spent explaining the benefits of Galileo and the potential applications of Galileo and EGNOS in the region.
Another of the activities that was carried out was the discussion “GNSS applications in strategic sectors of the region” in which different representatives of national and European companies and organizations presented use cases applied to rail transport, agriculture, and aviation businesses. The regulatory issue was also discussed in all these areas.
As in all the events organised by the GIC, the closing event gave high visibility to the EGNSS programmes and the activities of the Galileo Information Centre for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, as well as allowing the transfer of knowledge to those present from diplomacy, government, academia, industry, AEM and the GIC.
